The history of Waiuta

Where it is and why

If you follow the Snowy Road on the West Coast you will arrive at an old ghost
town called Waiuta. A large gold vain was found in 1905 by Jimmy Martin at
the location where Waiuta was to be founded. The gold vain was named the
Birthday Reef because it was discovered on King Edwards the VII’s birthday.

How they got the gold out

By the 1930’s Waiuta had a population of around 600 people. The miners
drilled and blasted the gold and quartz out of the rock. The timber around
Waiuta provide the people with housing and helped stabilised the mines from
collapsing. Mercury, cyanide and other toxic chemicals were used to separate
the gold from the quartz ore. In 2017 EnviroWaste cleared the chemicals from
the Prohibition Shaft site at a cost of $3.6 million.

Places where the gold goes

There were two means of crashing the quartz to extract the gold.

1. The battery process. Gold was pounded out of the ore using a water
2. powered battery of iron stamps. This occurred at the Snowy Battery.
3. The ball mill. Iron balls in revolving steel drums crushing the quartz rock.
4. This occurred at the Prohibition Mill site.

Dates of what happened

On King Edward the VII birthday a reef of gold had been found. By the 1930s over 600 people had been staying at a gold mine called Waiuta. Between 1939 and 1946 the number of men employed by the company fell from 240 to 113 because of the first World War as there was no one to mine and make money. On July 9th 1951 the Blackwater Shaft collapsed, and the mine began to flood. Many people became jobless and were forced to leave Waiuta and settle somewhere else. Many of the buildings eventually got dismantled, and within a couple months, Waiuta became a ghost town, with nothing to offer.

i think that my time table for my inquire is  going good and i am getting throw it.
i think that my first week is going good because i have got throw it well and with pet day i think it went good.
my project is going good and i am being challenged.
i think that my time table is helping me a lot other wise i will be of track and sidetracked.
i think that i will be adding stuff on to my time table because i don't know the future.

i think that it is good how it is in the class right now because i get on with my work and i am used to it. i get on with being told what to do but i would prefer being asked what i want to do. i keep focus by doing the one thing and deal with the thing that i am doing. i will focus with my projects i will just do it and get it done with.

My story

You could hear the sweat running down the man's face from a mile away. It was an ancient land of trees and lots of plants. You could smell the wet dew falling to the dark green grass. In front of the old man was a witch with old wrinkly skin crookedly stood in front of the man.

Critical Thinking Challenges:

1. Do you believe kids being really busy is a good or a bad thing? Why?

I think that kids being bussey is a good thing because they might not like it but if  you don’t do it then
you will get lazy and fat.

2. If you think bad, think of three solutions for this issue. If you think good, think of three ways to
encourage other kids to get busier! Do lots of work and don’t get lazy.

3. Think about the role of teachers and parents in encouraging extra-curricular activities. Is it up to them,
or to the kids themselves?  I think that parents should tell kids what to do.

Practical Tasks:

1. Ask your parents what they think is best, and what worked with you and your siblings. My Dad thinks
that it is good for me to do work otherwise I will get lazy.

2. Make yourself a schedule for this week that keeps you busy in the afternoon or when you would usually
have downtime. If it goes well you could make it permanent! Monday get ready for school. Get on the bus
get to school do work at school go home on the bus go on the farm and get calves go home and get
ready for scouts when Dad gets home we go to scouts.   

3. Research the positives and negatives of being a kid with a busy schedule. What are the short and long
term effects? Working, whether paid or unpaid, is good for our health and wellbeing. It contributes to our
happiness, helps us to build confidence and self-esteem, and rewards us financially. Because of these
benefits, it is important to return to work as soon as possible after an illness or injury.

little red riding hood

Little red riding hood.

In a time of violence and war there was a small village on top of a rolling hill. The small village had
never seen the light since the last wolf had been slayed.

In the old village there was a little girl with long blond hair. She was related to the old man that
had slayed the wolf. It was at least 100 years ago since it had happened. The old man had been
caught face to face with the biggest and baddest wolf of all. The man was pinned to the ground
but he remembered  the knife that he keeps in his pocket. The old man jabed the wolf with the
knife and ran to the axe that he dropped. The big man swung his axe and cut the wolf right
through the head. Under the full moon the man gutted the wolf. He wiped the blood with his coat
and it faded blood red.

The man ran back to the old cottage doorway kicking his big black old boots to the wall. One
month later under the full moon the old man had got sick and was dying. all of a sudden the old
man fell dead in the living room floor. The person who was living with him took the coat off the
man and buried him the next day. The rest of the time she was alive she had a baby that grew up
and took the coat. Time passed on and the coat was passed through time until it was little red
riding hood's turn to take it on.

It was a couple years after little red riding hood had the coat she got ordered to go to
grandma's old cottage and give granny a basket of treats. Little red riding hood’s mum yelled that
if she didn’t she would get the five knife slices. But it was the wrong day to go into the woods.

The little girl grabbed a knife in case granny went crazy. So little red riding hood set off on her
journey to grandma's house. It had been a while since she had gone to grandma's house. The path
was a lot overgrown. When little red riding hood had reached halfway of the track there was a
small muddy hill. As little red riding hood slowly walked past she slipped and fell she ended down
by a small river that was really cold and was a dark watery color that had big cubes of ice.

Little red riding hood looked up and saw that there was a bridge in front of her that looked like
blocks of melting chocolate. Next to her she saw a little boy that was quite fat on the other side
of the river. Little red riding hood asked whereabouts she was to the little boy and he told her to
run away very quietly.

He started to walk away with a small bucket of the water that he got from the stream.  As he
walked little red riding hood looked in front of him and there was a big mansion of all the sweets
you can imagine. It started to get dark and little red riding hood fell asleep on the green moss.
The next day little red riding hood woke up it felt like she was in a bed of marshmallows and when
she looked she was in a bed of marshmallows! Little red riding hood was shocked. She lay on the
soft bed until she heard someone quietly knocking at the door made of chocolate.

She whispered to the door come in and the door opened. At the other side of the room the creaky door opened and a little boy stood at the door. With a dirty apron on he walked to the bed and with a slow heart little red riding hood wisped  ‘where am i and waited for a reply was come here’. The boy took me to the kitchen and in the middle of the room there was a big pot. After a little bit of time I asked what is the bubbly water in it. But before she could say the last words the door opened and Hansle pushed little red riding hood into the boiling hot water and she died slowly in pain. The end.

i think that SDL  is good for me because i get to sort out my stuff by my self. i think it is good so i can get a head start for when i am elder.  i think i am a little bit behind on my maths but i will be able to get it done. me and Zak are doing our inquiries  and we do it during SDL. i do my inquire quit a lot because i like doing it. i think new learning would be good but i already have a lot of work to do but i don't mind.

Little red riding hood.

i  think that it will be a change but change is good sometimes. I do think i will change because we will have a new teacher and they might want us to act better. i think having a new teacher their could be some more changes in work. i think it could be for the better because change is good. with change i will still be on task.

I think that I am going well with my groups this week. I liked how we get to do our vocabulary and how we can do watercolour.

The three little pigs

The three little pigs

Once upon a time there lived a house of five small and smelly pigs. Time came for the playful pigs to leave home. The last words from the smelly  pigs parents was to have fun and do not go to strangers house. Of course the pigs were not listening. So the little pigs trotted off wondering what to do first. The three little pigs went to town. They spent all of their money on stuff to eat and stuff to play with, but little did they know what awaited for them. The little pigs had spent all of their money on stuff they had not needed. The pigs found a old cottage sign that told hotel. The pigs thought about it and stayed the night but it felt funny for the pigs to not have anyone put breakfast on their table. When they got up out of bed they noticed some disturbing noise coming from a room that said keep out. The pig sat at the door waiting for something to happen. About two minutes waiting at the door someone turned the door handle, but before the pigs could run away from the door a big tall wolf stood at the doorway waiting for the pigs to move. The old wolf said in a deep voice “ hello little pigs ”and they all ran away but before the little pigs stubby legs could get to the door the wolf ran past the pigs and locked it up high where the pigs could not reach. The pigs were doomed. After a lot of panicking he pigs decided to go to their room. But on the way to their room the pigs walked past an old living room. It had a big table but what confused the pigs was their was smelly red blobs all over the table. The pigs sniffed it and the smell reminded them of their parents. The pigs  also saw knife marks. The pigs got frightened and ran to their room. They got to their room and was horrified they could not move because they all had knives shoved in their back. When the pigs got up from their sleep they still could not move because they were strapped to a table with big bloody leather straps. The three little pigs had nothing to do so they waited for the wolfs to come back and end their lives. The wolf never came back to the old cottage because he found out the pigs had a very bad disease called mouldy cheese cancer so the wolf had died in the woods and the three little pigs died happily ever after.

How does fermentation help the gut biome.

There are scientists that have estimated to be over 100 trillion types of bacteria in your body! I am going to tell you about what is fermentation and why is it good for the gut biome. Then I will be revealing some facts about what is bacteria?  Then I will tell you what is fermentation, then I will tell you what is the gut biome. Last of all I will be revealing what is probiotics and prebiotics.

What is bacteria.

Did you know bacteria is a microbe that lives in your body! Bacteria contributes to the body by chewing food that we can’t digest. Did you know Some bacteria is bad and eats all the fatty food in your body, if you eat lots of fatty food your bad bacteria will grow and the good bacteria will shrink and die! Bacteria have different rolls to help the human body, If you eat lots of healthy food the bacteria will grow and be stronger. If you eat not much food the bacteria will die. If we never had bacteria we would be dead.

What is the gut biome

The gut biome is the gut. The gut is in the organs in the human body. Bacteria lives all through the gut biome. The bacteria that lives in the body eats the food that we can’t digest.

What is fermentation and how does it help the gut biome.

Fermentation is a type of food that is made to last longer. Some fermentation is like cheese and souwercrot.It helps the gut biome because it is healthy and has protein. Did you know that eating fermentation food you will live longer with a better healthy lifestyle.

What is probiotics and prebiotics.

Probiotics are a friendly type of bacteria that live in your gut. Prebiotics are food in your digestive system that we can’t digest so we need help to digest from bacteria. They are both the same in a way by both being healthy bacteria.

My favourite time with my friend is when I went to his house and we tried to catch a goat and we got to pick a Guinea Pig from his cage and I got to have a sleepover at his house. I got to go on the four wheeler in the paddock. We also found some cool rocks. After that I slipped over a muddy hill and I got covered in mud.

In my holidays me dad and mum and my brother went Hanmer

springs and on bike rides. We went there with our friends on the track and I went over the handlebars twice. When we finished I decided to go through a creek my feet were hurting they were so coldest and And the we stayed in our motel.And we went home and I played legends that is a game of league.

How to make farmers cheese

At school for topic we have been making fermented food which is a food made to last longer. Since we were doing this I thought that I should try to make some cheese because it would be interesting and we live on a farm. When I finished it came out as a puffy sort of curd. I had a try of it and it had a nice taste like a sort of cottage pie. I recommend it and the recipe is below the picture.

  How to make cheese.

The Ingredients

water,white vinegar, knife,whisk ,large pot, milk, cheese cloth.

• Put two letters of milk in a large pot and boil it on the stove at 80 degrees.
• Mix it lightly with the whisk until it bubbles up and goes chunky.
• After that take the pot off the oven and turn it off.
• Get a small cup and scoop up all of the curd and put it in the cheesecloth.
• Let the milk drain out and of the cloth.
• Then put the cheese in a box and enjoy.
